Patients with lactic acidosis, previously observed, died within days of onset of the disease and were little helped by alkali therapy. A very high proportion of "excess lactate" in the blood of these patients suggested the basis to be tissue hypoxia, but the cause of the hypoxia is not known; neither hypoxemia nor circulatory failure was present. Attempts were made to determine the protective efficacy against experimental excess lactatemias of substances known to facilitate mitochondrial electron transport and permit tissue oxidations to occur at very low PO2.
