A lipoprotein substance which lines the alveolar membrane has assumed considerable importance in respiratory mechanics by its ability to lower surface tension as surface area decreases. Studies of human lung tissue have been few, but have suggested that a deficiency of or an antagonist to this surfactant exists in the lungs of patients dying of pulmonary hyaline membrane disease, atelectasis neonatorum, and following prolonged extracorporeal perfusion.
