Thirty years ago, Arthur Grollman's The Cardiac Output of Man in Health and Disease was published by Charles C Thomas and promptly achieved the status of a classic in the cardiovascular field. It was astonishingly inclusive, but its main contribution was a careful description of the physiologic variations of cardiac output, most of which is still perfectly valid. The volume was never reprinted and is now a collector's item.
Doctors Wade and Bishop of Belfast and Birmingham, respectively, have now produced a worthy successor to Grollman's book. Theirs is a splendid work, very carefully done, logically laid out, well illustrated
