Textbooks of surgery are rarely reviewed in journals of internal medicine, but Dr. Warren's book demands an exception. I will not try a critical analysis of his text and that of his collaborators—a task better left to better judges. But his book demands attention here, because it could serve as a model for a textbook of internal medicine someone should write.
Physicians aged enough to remember Dr. Homans' textbook of surgery will know Dr. Warren's model without reading his "Preface" in which he states clearly his debt to Homans' classic. Such aged physicians will remember the historical notes that let
