The collection and synthesis of the rapidly expanding knowledge in gastroenterology is a formidable undertaking. This completely rewritten first volume of a 3-volume series on gastroenterology by Henry L. Bockus and his colleagues and students accomplishes this difficult task very well. Thirty-one authors have contributed a comprehensive textbook on the upper digestive tract, comprising 40 chapters and 927 pages, and have maintained the excellent tradition achieved by the first edition.
The volume is divided into 3 sections. Section I includes an informative discussion on the examination of the patient, with chapters on history taking, symptomatology, the physical examination, and laboratory
