The authors represent unusual collaborators: a consultant and a general practitioner. According to the preface, their objective was a simple, well-balanced monograph on diseases of the respiratory system, useful for medical students and general practitioners, with emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of common respiratory illnesses of children and adults. This objective seems adequately fulfilled. Early chapters are concerned with succinct descriptions of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and methods of clinical evaluation. The section on physical examination omits much of the trivia dear to the authors of texts on physical examination and clearly outlines useful techniques for obtaining and recording physical findings
