The 5 chapters of The Spleen are essays by several contributors dealing with splenic structure, function, pathology, and the differential diagnosis and surgical management of splenomegaly. These essays are of unequal quality.
The chapter on structure of the spleen by A. W. Ham is brief and not exactly up to date. The text has been taken, almost verbatim, from the fourth edition of Histology by Ham and Leeson (Lippincott, 1961), and the illustrations are from the same source. The discussion of splenic circulation might have been improved by reference to the recent electron microscopic studies of Weiss and those of
