A new monograph on heparin should find a wide and receptive audience; notable advances have been made in the 17 years since publication of the standard reference for earlier years by the Swedish biochemist Jorpes.
Although the new volume, like its well-known predecessor, attempts broad coverage of of the chemistry, physiology, and clinical use of heparin, the quality of the separate sections is uneven, perhaps a reflection of the special interests of the author, whose contributions over the past decade have dealt principally with the lipemia-clearing effect of heparin and the possible relationship of this phenomenon to the pathogenesis of
