In this monograph of 275 pages, with almost 1,000 references, Dr. Remmele has made an extremely thorough assessment of the humoral regulation of red cell production. The major part of the book is devoted to erythropoietin, but forty pages are reserved for "non-specific" erythropoietic stimulation induced by other hormones. The book is written as a thesis, with each chapter giving the author's personal interpretation of the literature, followed by a detailed description of his own studies and a conclusion which does not lack in conviction or certainty.
