The radiation safety record of the laboratories and industrial establishments involved in nuclear science research, development and applications has been remarkable. Between August 8, 1945, and November 15, 1960, there were 160 accidents reported in the United States and Europe. These involved radiation injury to 225 persons, 7 of whom died. The total number of scientists, engineers, and technicians at risk is not mentioned in this handbook, but evidence is presented which indicates that for the Atomic Energy Commission and its contractors there are about 90 ordinary industrial injuries for each casualty due to radiation.
