This monograph on thrombophlebitis is divided into four sections. The first on the etiology of thrombophlebitis includes an enumeration of factors concerned in the formation and lysis of intravascular thrombi. The second section is concerned with the diagnosis of thrombophlebitis in the extremities, the brain, and viscera, and associated changes in the circulating blood are discussed. Medical and surgical treatment of diagnosed cases are dealt with in the next section, in which venous ligation is favored. The final section, entitled "New Horizons" presents four imaginative, though largely theoretical, concepts concerning the pathogenesis of thrombophlebitis.
