Venography, the roentgenographic examination of veins which have been injected with a radio-opaque substance, may be helpful in revealing the state of the venous circulation. It can facilitate accurate early diagnosis of thrombophlebitis and the assessment of therapeutic techniques. It can be useful in the diagnosis of acute and chronic unexplained edema of the leg or in the selection of therapy in complicated varicose vein problems. Used serially over long periods of time, venograms can help clarify the natural evolution of chronic venous obstruction and cast some light on the function of the involved veins.
