The terminology of malaria had grown to be exceedingly complex and exemplifies as well as any biomedical area the results of anarchy in nomenclature compounded by nationalism. Hence, in 1953 WHO began a series of publications intended to reduce this confusion. Since 1953, however, studies on malaria have advanced rapidly. Emphasis now is upon malaria eradication rather than control. This publication attempts to further simplify terminology and to incorporate the recently developed concepts. It should be a welcome guide.
