This book is, fittingly, a product of Toronto and, more specifically, of its University. It was here, as everyone knows, that Banting and Best discovered insulin in 1921. The three principal authors of this volume, all members of the faculty of the University, have absorbed the insulin story at its source, and they tell it with the authority of intimate knowledge. Professor Wrenshall, primarily a biophysicist, became diabetic during World War II and since then has made many valuable contributions to the understanding of the disease.
