Toxicity that has handicapped the utilization of 5-fluorouracil for cancer chemotherapy has been greatly reduced by intravenous infusion of drug in 5% dextrose over an 8-hour period, permitting increased dosage and use with radiation therapy. This report evaluates over 100 slowly infused patients in whom moderate to severe toxicity occurred in only 6% with doses up to 25 g in as many days. Objective remissions attributed to drug alone were noted in 10%, with another 20% responding to combination therapy using X ray or steroids.
