Shortly after this volume was received for review, several house staff officers were asked to read it and render an opinion. Their response was lukewarm, and they concluded that they found no great need for such a volume in a large metropolitan hospital. One member of the group was taken by the description of regulation of diabetes using a "sliding scale," a technique known by the grandiloquent phrase, "regulation by reduction," here in the Midwest. This intern was reprimanded as sharply as the buyer's market for house officers will permit.
