Progress in the understanding of a disease is often like a forest fire; it creeps along for a while in the underbrush so that only a few specially knowledgeable people are aware of it, then suddenly it bursts into flame for the whole world to see. The field of the respiratory viruses has recently caught fire, and a Committee headed by Dr. Clayton Loosli have taken us on a trip to see the site. The occasion was the Conference on the Newer Respiratory Viruses held at the National Institutes of Health in October, 1962; the proceedings have been published as
