Controversy concerning the possible benefits and evil consequences of the widespread use of tobacco has continued since its introduction into common use three centuries ago. With the development of ready-made cigarettes the inhalation of tobacco smoke has become steadily more prevalent and the gap between the sexes in use of cigarettes has been closing rapidly in recent years. Cigarette smoking has now become the tenacious habit of the majority of male adults and is fast approaching such in women.
