The critic of books must play his game by its rules; if he does not, his readers quickly disqualify him. He looks the ass if he attacks Remembrance of Things Past on the grounds that his son of six years cannot read it, and he fares no better if he damns the author of John on the Farm for failing to delineate the Oedipal problem of the son of Farmer Brown. He must judge a book for its intended audience.
