The addition of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) to blood, in vitro or in vivo, causes blood cells to aggregate. This observation stimulated a study of 5-hydroxytryptamine levels in the blood during hemorrhagic shock, a state in which aggregation of blood cells may become marked. 5-Hydroxytryptamine determined spectrofluorometrically increased slightly in portal venous and arterial whole blood and in portal venous plasma. However, when a radioactive technique was used large amounts of labeled material were found to be released into the portal venous blood. The platelets in blood of shocked animals were shown to be much more adhesive than platelets in control blood
