Fatty acids with 10 or less carbon atoms are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, transported to the liver via the portal venous system, and sequentially oxidized to CO2 and water. Measurement of the expired, radioactive carbon dioxide after the administration of C14-labeled medium chain fats and fatty acids provides a rapid means of studying absorption and oxidation of these lipids. Experiments with octanoic acid have demonstrated that the oxidation of this fatty acid proceeds at nearly the same rate when the liver is excluded from the circulation in rats and is relatively uninhibited by increased blood levels of glucose
