Urinary alkaline phosphatase and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activity measurements provide specific and sensitive tools for the detection and diagnosis of urologic disease. Both the urinary alkaline phosphatase and LDH activities are elevated by carcinomas of the kidney (1-3), whereas, only the urinary LDH activity is elevated by localized carcinomas of the bladder. Urinary enzyme activities are elevated not only by urologic carcinomas but also by other serious parenchymal renal diseases (3, 4).
