If a patient is placed in a chamber, subjected to a pressure greater than atmospheric, and then breathes pure oxygen, two things happen. The partial pressure of oxygen in his alveoli and arterial blood rises to levels higher than those obtaintable at atmospheric pressure, and because of this rise in partial pressure, more oxygen dissolves in arterial plasma. It is these long-recognized and simple facts that form the physiological basis for the current upsurge of interest in the use of hyperbaric oxygen as a treatment technique.
