Dr. Schwartz' book is a useful addition to the several monographs on diseases of the liver already available. No other presentation of the surgical point of view is as complete, thorough, and up to date as this one. The topics of the text include surgical anatomy, function tests, general problems of surgery and anesthesia, diseases of infancy, trauma, tumors, hepatic resection, transplantation, and portal hypertension. The extrahepatic biliary drainage system is not covered.
The discussion of anatomy is well-illustrated and is based on the modern division of lobes. Special diagnostic tests are described in adequate detail, and the hazards are
