It has been postulated recently that an interdependent system involving renin, angiotensin, and aldosterone may be involved in the production of certain types of human hypertension (1, 2). A number of studies have demonstrated an interaction of renin with angiotensin I to form angiotensin II (3-5), which stimulates aldosterone secretion by the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex (3, 6-8). Aldosterone, by means of its potent mineralocorticoid effect on sodium and potassium balance, produces an elevation in systemic arterial blood pressure (2-9).
