Genetics has come to assume the dimensions and proportions of an additional basic science within the wider discipline of modern medicine. Advances in this field in the last decade have been truly phenomenal and have brought with them the necessity for the physician to learn a new language and to acquire a new way of thinking. In a like fashion, the emergence of medical genetics as a separate entity has posed problems in communication for the "pure" geneticist who is unfamiliar with medical terminology and precepts.
