I write this review with a certain degree of ambivalence. There are so many things I like about this text. It is encyclopedic in scope, the illustrations are superb (both the diagrams and the reproductions), and the bibliography at the end of each chapter is comprehensive. The author apparently long has been interested in this subject, and he is most interesting and impressive when he is dealing with historical aspects. His style at these points is light, chatty, and interesting.
Most of the text, however, is a heavily annotated abstract of the important literature—here the style is ponderous, but scholarly.
