During the past decade, more than 100 analogs of the natural neurohypophyseal hormones have been synthesized and tested for antidiuretic, pressor, uterotonic, galactobolic, and other biological activities. Thus, the vasopressin-oxytocin analog series now presents the most extensive material available for study of the structure-function relationship of biologically active peptides. Features of the cellular, tissue, and organ responses to some of these peptide hormone analogs will be discussed, particularly in relation to mechanisms that may underlie the molecular requirements for biologic activity.
