The effects of stimulation and blockade of beta-adrenergic receptors on plasma free fatty acids (FFA) and blood glucose (G) were observed in eight normal subjects during a control period (A) and after hypermetabolism (B) was induced with graded doses of triiodothyronine (150-500 μg/day for 14 days). Non-heparinized venous blood was obtained before and during the fourth minute of beta-receptor stimulation (isoproterenol, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1 μg/kg/min intravenously) before and after a beta-receptor blocker (propranolol, 0.15 mg/kg intravenously). Significant attenuation of the normal chronotropic and inotropic effects of isoproterenol in both periods by propranolol was used as an index of beta-adrenergic
