For the previous 6 years a patient interview and discussion course focusing on the doctor-patient relationship has been conducted for freshmen medical students at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. Changes in the format and content that have taken place in the past few years will be described. Instructors view this course as one that dramatically highlights the student's psychological problems, particularly those in his interpersonal relationships, which are potential sources of difficulty for future medical practice.
