Most readers of this book will think of it as a monograph on atherosclerosis, but the authors do not like that term because of its connotations; while their feeling has good grounds and is ably presented, it does require a caveat lest someone think the volume encompasses such diseases as polyarteritis and vascular tumors.
The first 232 pages are devoted to a detailed autopsy study of the heart and certain arteries in 293 patients selected at random. The remainder of the book reviews the literature on individual and environmental factors in arterial disease, on the pathogenesis of arterial plaques, on
