The realization in the last few years that the mammalian body is capable of developing immune reactions against some of its own constituents has acted as a powerful stimulus to research in the area of auto-antibodies and auto-immune disease. Because of the many recent improvements in the isolation and characterization of proteins, and especially of antibody proteins, considerable increases in the sensitivity of the methods available for the detection of antibodies, including auto-antibodies, has resulted.
Further, the theoretical implications of antibodies in regard to mechanics of antibody production, tolerance, and immunologic research have created conceptual controversy leading to an explosion
