This paper attempts to present a brief, hopefully impartial, summary of the general terminological problems involved in the description and characterization of acid-base disorders. This is far from an easy task since virtually every author in the field has introduced individual variations in definitions of the terms "acidosis" and "alkalosis" or "respiratory" and "metabolic." Furthermore, as one reads the same author there are variations either intentional or unintentional from paper to paper. It is true that among experts these variations in many instances may appear to be trivial, but when nonexperts, particularly students, attempt to study this complex subject, the
