Two recent reports indicate that about one fourth of cases of transfusion-associated viral hepatitis have incubation periods compatible with the infectious rather than serum form of this disease. To obtain additional information concerning the etiology of this complication of transfusional therapy, the data available to the Communicable Disease Center from states cooperating in the hepatitis surveillance program have been reviewed.
In patients developing viral hepatitis after receiving only whole blood or unpooled derivatives, incubation periods show a unimodal distribution skewed to the right. The median incubation period in this group is 56 days. In those receiving only pooled plasma or
