Based on a symposium held at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, this multi-authored compendium will likely be recognized as a milestone publication on the relation of skin bacteria and infections in man. Though each contributor writes decisively and reflects primarily on his own work, each of 22 sections is skillfully related to the one before and after (except the first and last!). Consistently, each presentation is clearly written. One reads easily through early discussions reviewing old and new information on quantitative and qualitative skin bacteriology in regard to both "normal" resident and pathogenic bacteria.
