The material in this book and its accompanying programed text is an expanded version of a series of lectures given to third year medical students at the University of Illinois. The companion self-instructional text is divided into short teaching paragraphs, each followed by multiple choice questions and answers. The answers are numbered and refer the reader to similarly numbered paragraphs where each answer is discussed. This approach compares favorably to individual classroom instruction.
