Treatment of respiratory insufficiency, either acute or chronic, is becoming increasingly complex and, at the same time, increasingly effective. Instruments for precise assessment of alveolar ventilation and for arterial blood gas analysis are available, and the distribution of these items will be widespread in the next few years. Several mechanical devices for providing respiratory assistance are on the market, and new respirators are being developed. It is not unrealistic to expect that within the next few years all community hospitals and medical centers will have the equipment required for respiratory therapy.
