A computer system for high speed monitoring and immediate reporting on the condition of critically ill patients has been developed in the Shock Research Unit at the Los Angeles County Hospital. The system includes an IBM 1620 digital computer and an analogue to digital converter. It accepts electrical signals from 11 transducers on the patient's body. These are used to provide a total of 26 items of information on the physiological status of the patient. Arterial and venous pressure, heart, pulse and respiratory rate, body temperatures, and other physiological parameters are measured automatically as frequently as every 3 minutes and
