Thiamine-deficient hearts have been demonstrated by light microscopy to show interstitial edema with hydropic and fatty degeneration of the myocardial fibers. This report is the first ultrastructure study of thiamine-deficient cardiac muscle. Twenty-four adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups. Controls were fed a standard balanced diet containing 2.2 mg of thiamine 100 g of diet. The other group received the same diet, without thiamine. The thiamine-deficient group rapidly developed beri-beri, manifest by weakness, weight loss, epilation and labored respirations. They were given 5 µg of thiamine occasionally to maintain life and induce a chronic deficient state. After
