Myocardial infarction and diabetes mellitus frequently occur together, and either may precede the other. However, subclinical atherosclerosis and latent diabetes may be present for indeterminate durations so that the onset of clinical manifestations cannot be used to determine the priority of one over the other. We have attempted to approach a solution to possible interrelationships of these two disorders by determining the glucose individual fatty acid responses of ischemic patients and comparing them to those of insulin-dependent diabetic patients and those of normals.
