This study reports factors that influence the results of psychotherapy of colitis patients such as duration and intensity of treatment, psychiatric diagnosis, precipitating events, the significance of depression versus paranoid trends, and perhaps most important, the nature of the kind of object relationships sought by the patient. The paper also touches on the significance of the patient's capacity to change his environment and on the special problem of fitting the optimal type of the therapeutic intervention to a particular patient.
