Mucopolysaccharides are the high-molecular weight negatively charged carbohydrate components present in the intercellular spaces of connective tissues. They appear to play a role in ion exchange, and their association with collagen fibers may determine the mechanical properties of connective tissues. The chemistry of these substances has been worked out in the past 20 years largely through the efforts of Karl Meyer and his colleagues. More recently it has been found that mucopolysaccharides in the native state exist in firm combination with noncollagenous protein.
