Radioautography has demonstrated the existence of considerable synthetic activity in cells. After administration of labeled nucleosides it is possible to show continuous synthesis of nucleic acid (RNA) in the nucleus of most cells, followed by migration to cytoplasm. With labeled amino acids, it may be seen that there is continuous synthesis of protein in all cells, both in nucleus and cytoplasm where the synthesis occurs in relation to ribosomes. Recently, after injection of labeled glucose or galactose, continuous synthesis of complex carbohydrates, such as glycoprotein, has been observed in the Golgi region of many cells.
