The serum of the majority of patients with myasthenia gravis contains globulins that bind to components of normal cells, as demonstrated by immunofluorescent staining and complement fixation. In 62% of patients serum globulin bound to striations of normal skeletal muscle, in 15% to nuclei of muscle or calf thymic cells, and in 30% to cytoplasm of calf thymic epithelial cells. In 48% of patients serum globulin reacted with ribonucleo-protein obtained from normal muscle, as indicated by complement fixation. The incidence of these reactions was highest in patients with generalized myasthenia gravis of severe degree and of less than 3 year's
