A majority of the drugs that are essential to the practice of medicine today have become available as a result of the tremendous advances in chemical and pharmaceutical research during the past 25 years. Many of these modern therapeutic agents are extremely potent, and physicians need an adequate understanding of their physiologic, pharmacologic, and toxicologic actions. Also, doctors need to be alert to the appearance of unusual reactions that new drugs may cause, either alone or in combination, or as a result of interaction with concomitantly administered agents or dietary constituents.
