Over the past 15 years respiratory physiology, both basic and applied, has advanced enormously and has matured as a clinically useful discipline. Within the past 5 years this newer knowledge has been compiled in half a dozen monographs, the most complete of which are the two Handbooks of the American Physiological Society.
What place is there, then, for a new summary, Respiration, by Pierre Dejours? I think it has a legitimate place. It is a particularly clear description of an area of knowledge in which it is easy to get lost. Dr. Dejours has shown how the structure of modern
