These ten lectures on pulmonary physiology and lung disease and nine on clinical heart disease were published 2½ years after presentations at postgraduate courses of the American College of Chest Physicians. Most of them are clinical presentations, and they vary considerably in depth and clarity. Several are useful summaries including the description of lung volume measurement and its applications in diagnosis which, however, made the section on spirometry unnecessary; the discussion of respiratory acidosis, defined as a reduced arterial blood pH, which emphasizes the diversity of antecedent diseases and precipitating situations; and the section on the diagnosis of diffuse lung
