Dr. Ralli purports to provide the practicing physician with a practical approach to the management of the patient with diabetes mellitus. To this end she discusses the institution and manipulation of diet, insulin, and the oral agents in a simple direct manner. The sample menus, tables of food values and protocols of patient management, which comprise 75 of the book's 177 pages, are very good. There is, however, no presentation of how protein, fat, carbohydrate, or calories are to be determined by and for the needs of weight, age, and activity. There is only a table of allowances based on
