Investigations of the mechanism of regulation of red cell production have received their impetus in recent years from the classical experiments of Reissman (1), which clearly established the existence of a humoral erythropoietic factor, and the studies of Jacobson, Plzak, Fried, and Goldwasser (2) and Jacobson, Gurney, and Goldwasser (3), which made available a series of simple, sensitive procedures for its bioassay.
