House officers and medical students frequently ask which book on kidney disease and acid-base and electrolyte equilibrium they should use to supplement their knowledge in the field. Kidney and Electrolytes contains several first-rate sections such as those on acute and chronic renal failure, the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism and the treatment of hypertension. In addition, the generous use of the concept of balance as applied to electrolyte and acid-base disorders is commendable. These advantages, however, are far outweighed by the several shortcomings.
